We're not savages, after all.
And so, when we can, we "go" in style.
And you get the bill.
It's a bathroom fit for a king - or, rather, a Cabinet secretary. The Interior Department, according to a new report, spent $222,000 renovating a 100-square-foot bathroom in the private office of the secretary. That's more than most people spend on a home -- and the price tag attracted an internal audit.
According to documents obtained by the Cox Washington bureau, government auditors questioned the "luxurious materials" used in the 2007 renovation.
Those materials included: $1,500 worth of wall panels; $26,000 worth of custom cabinets; and a fridge that cost $3,500.
Imagine, if you can, a bathroom without a refrigerator that cost as much as a small car.
Imagine, if you can, the mentality that would put that on a "must-have" list.
Try to figure out, if you can, how this could possibly be "for the children", as nearly all government expenditures are touted to be.
Note, if you care to, that this expenditure of public funds - coming to light only six years after it occurred - took place with a Republican in the White House and a Congress in the control of Democrats.
You may now wag your head and sigh . . .
In appropriate disgust, frustration, and - yes - anger.
It won't help, but . . .
It can't hurt.
